Researchers Says Philippines To Experience More Serious Disasters Others Haven’t Seen

Researchers said that the Philippines is expected to experience more serious disasters that others haven’t seen.

Researchers Ramon Lopez, Vinod Thomas, and Pablo Troncoso released a study using climate change from 155 countries spanning more than four decades. The research assesses the factors contributing to the frequent occurrence of storms and intense floods.

The findings also show that the atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration from 1970 to 2016 contributes to the increase of extreme disasters. Those severe calamities affect more than 1,000 people and can cause 100 deaths or more.

Vinod Thomas said that the increasing level of atmospheric carbon dioxide and intense hydrometeorological disasters could cause at least one extreme disaster per year. He also said that it is much more serious in the Philippines.

“You are looking at more disasters that others haven’t seen, one more extreme event in the Philippines, for example, one more Supertyphoon ‘Yolanda’ or Typhoon ‘Pablo’ or Tropical Storm ‘Ondoy’, would strain the country’s ability to cope,” Thomas said.

Thomas explained that the doubling number of natural disasters and calamities in the Philippines could end into a catastrophic result.

The researcher that the Philippines should invest more in disaster risk reduction and mitigation as well as exerting extra effort to adapt climate change. He also advised reducing the use of fossil fuels and coal.
