According to Inquirer’s Pop!, the celebration of New Year involves the usual feast, and of course, noises from fireworks, horns, and the like. While most of us enjoy the noise, pets don’t.

Dogs and cats usually suffer the most from the noise during this event. This is a widespread condition among pets called noise aversion or noise phobia. When exposed to an intolerable noise level, their behavior abruptly changes. This is something pet owners should watch out for.

Hence, the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) recently shared some useful reminders on keeping your pets safe, as per the report:

  1. Dogs have a much more sensitive hearing than humans. Hence, urge your family members from lighting up firecrackers and fireworks. Pets tend to lick off the explosive materials left on the ground, which is indeed dangerous.
  2. Canines tend to run away from shock when they get anxious. In case it happens, keep their collars and dog tags on at all times with your contact details.
  3. Make sure your gates, fences, and front doors are closed.
  4. It is recommended to give them exercise, food, and water they need days or hours before the festivities.
  5. Provide a safe room proper ventilation for your pets and keep the windows closed to reduce the noise level in the room.
  6. Play soothing music to help them feel peaceful and relaxed. Moreover, play music before festivities start.
