Talacogon LGU Speaks Out on Exploitation of Rene Baterbonia’s Death
The local government of Talacogon, Agusan del Sur, has urged the public to stop creating content that could take advantage of the death of student-athlete Rene Baterbonia. Rene, an Ateneo student-athlete, died after drowning during a team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora, on June 8, 2026.
In a statement, the Municipal Information Office said Rene’s family is asking vloggers, content creators, and social media users not to post videos or messages that may give the impression they are asking for financial donations on the family’s behalf. According to the local government, the family does not want Rene’s name or story to be used to collect money or gain attention online.
Authorities also reminded the public to be responsible when sharing information and to avoid spreading false or misleading content. The local government said it is investigating reports that financial donations may have been collected using Rene’s name without the family’s knowledge or approval. The investigation aims to determine whether the funds reached the intended recipients.
The local government also appealed to vloggers to limit content creation at Labnig Cemetery, where Rene was buried. Officials said the request is intended to maintain peace, show respect for the family, and prevent inappropriate activities at the cemetery.
The issue has also received attention from actor Lance Carr, who previously criticized individuals allegedly using Rene’s tragic death for online content and personal gain. He described such actions as insensitive and disrespectful.
The local government continues to ask everyone to respect Rene’s memory and the privacy of his grieving family. It also reminded the public to verify information before sharing it online and to avoid supporting or spreading content that may exploit the tragedy for views, attention, or financial benefit.
