Here’s the touching Gokongwei love story.
GOKONGWEI LOVE STORY – The story of love of John and Elizabeth that even death could not even tear them apart from each other.
Late tycoon John Gokongwei Jr. fell in love with the beautiful Elizabeth the moment he put his eyes saw her. She was 17 and he was just then around 23 or 24. He told her mother she was the one and pursued her for four (4) years. And in 1958, they got married.
They were gifted with six (6) children: Robina, Lance, Lisa, twins Faith and Hope, and Marcia and were all taught of humility and kindness. Maám Elizabeth was a founding member of Robinsons Department Store and a member of the Board of Trustees of the Gokongwei Brothers Foundation (GBF). They were great bosses and always inspire their employees to work “to make her happy and not disappoint her” and not out of fear.
Mr. John often has this handful of peanuts inside his pockets which is his favorite snacks and often times, leaving shells as traces. And his wife just let him be in order to keep him away from lechon and ice cream which are his favorites.
At 93 years old, Mr. John passed away after staying at the Manila Doctors Hospital for six weeks dating November 9, 2019. And following him, on November 16, 2019, exactly a week after, Maam Elizabeth went with him. It was surely a blissful 61 years of being married for them.
