They were forced to have their babies delivered via cesarean section in tents outside the provincial hospital of Cotabato. This was the 3rd quake to hit Mindanao.

Authorities scrambled to relocate locals and affected residents to safer areas. The magnitude-6.5 quakes damaged buildings that were previously hit with 2 tremors this month.

“Ang hospital namin, may mga cracks”, said Gov. Lala Mendoza. She added that even though they weren’t high-rise, they were still scared.

She added that this was the reason two c-section births were done in tents outside the hospital. Based on reports from ABS-CBN, the operations increased to 4 around noon.

This included an ectopic pregnancy, an operation where the embryo occurs outside the uterine cavity. The operation is also a leading cause of deaths related to pregnancy.

Because of the rampant quakes and aftershocks, the Cotabato provincial government declared a state of calamity. This lets the government tap into emergency funds.

Based on reports from ABS-CBN, the state of emergency has only been made in 2 previous instances this year. This was because of an increase in Dengue outbreaks and the El Niño.

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), over 2,000 aftershocks were recorded within 3 days. There was also a magnitude 5 quake in Cotabato during All Saint’s Day.

With the massive quakes jolting Mindanao, people were afraid of a possible tsunami. However, Philvocs have dispelled the possibility.

This was because the quake that hit Mindanao was an “in-land” quake. However, they noted that there may be more possible aftershocks.
