Introduce someone else into the conversation

Based on the article from Reader’s Digest, you can introduce someone who shares the same interest with the person you are having a conversation with. “The simplest way to leave someone who is monopolizing your time at a party is to pull someone else into the conversation. After a brief introduction, you are able to excuse yourself,” etiquette expert Jodi Smith, president of Mannersmith and author of From Clueless to Class Act shared.

Say that you have enjoyed talking with the person

One polite way of saying goodbye from a conversation is to tell the person that you have enjoyed talking to him/her. You may say this: “I have so enjoyed speaking with you and if you will excuse me, I have just seen a colleague/friend/another person that I need to speak with.”

Find a perfect timing to excuse yourself

“Use the refreshment table, the restroom, or the need to speak to the host/ hostess as a reason, if you feel you need to supply one,” Jennifer L. Scott, New York Times bestselling author of Lessons from Madame Chic suggested. However, be sure to do your excuse after you leave.

Fast track the conversation

You can fast track the conversation by asking the speaker with questions such as “how did it turn out in the end?” or “what was the final outcome of the situation?”. However, you must wait for the perfect pause in the conversation to ask and be sure that you do not sound irritated.

Suggest something to do

This tip is best for events with many interactive elements, such as wedding parties or conventions. You can suggest to the person you are having a conversation with to try the food you already ate. This is one example: “Hey, you should go try the jalapeño poppers in the kitchen—they’re delicious!”

Hand over your business card

In business meetings, asking for a business card can easily mean the conclusion of the conversation. However, as an alternative, you can also offer yours and this is a customary signal to close out a conversation, according to Jennifer Grant, a certified Business Etiquette, Personal Branding, and Image Coach.
