Duterte Supports SOGIE Bill, Separate Restroom For LGBTQ Members

Duterte Backs SOGIE Bill, Third Restroom for LGBTQ+ Members

DUTERTE – The spokesperson of Malacañang Palace, Salvador Panelo, said President Rodrigo Duterte supports the SOGIE bill and separate restroom for LGBTQ members.

One of the headlines in the Philippines today is the issue about the transgender restroom debate and the approval of the SOGIE (sexual orientation and gender identity and expression) equality bill. The bill is authored by Sen. Risa Hontiveros.

Among the senators who support the LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer) community are Senators Imee Marcos and Christopher “Bong” Go. They even had a selfie with the victim of the alleged harassment at Quezon City mall, Gretchen Custodio Diez.

Several celebrities have also expressed their opinions about the issue. They are Vice Ganda, Catriona Gray, Pia Wurtzbach, and Anne Curtis.

In a report, Vice said he agreed that a third restroom should be built for the transgenders since there are still lots of people who feel uncomfortable of sharing the toilet with the LGBTQ+ community.

Meanwhile, the Malacañang spokesperson Salvador Panelo disclosed that President Rodrigo Duterte is also in favor of building a 3rd restroom for the transgenders during his interview with the ABS-CBN reporter Karen Davila.

“Sabi nya (Duterte) dapat meron third restroom for them. Pinag-usapan naming iyun kahapon… that will solve everything kasi papasok ka sa female, siyempre di rin kumportable ‘yung mga babae, alam nila lalaki pala iyun. Ganoon din sa kabila. The best is you have a third restroom for them,” said Panelo.

Salvador Panelo also said that the 74-year-old chief executive is also “very supportive” of the Anti-discrimination bill. He said Duterte understand that some people feel uncomfortable sharing the restroom with trans men and women.

The statements of the spokesperson gathered various reactions from the online community. Here are some of their comments on the video:

@daffy dapzz: “Make an extra washroom and just call it a family room. It doesn’t have to bear the name as LGBTQ washroom.”

@Ang Probinsyana 2019: “Pres Duterte payakap naman”

@Noel Balde: “Hindi problema kung walang LGBTQ crs. May nabibiling namang adult diaper – yun na lang ang gawin nila. Mag-diaper na lang.”
