In a recent report, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) have made efforts in probing is Shopee’s issue regarding their Blackpink promo.

Following their probe, the department warned the digital retail market about the possibility of imposing penalties which would obligate them to pay P300,000 for violations.

The Fair Trade Enforcement Bureau from DTI consulted with Shopee recently after being notified of the complaints from Korean girl group Blackpink’s fans or popularly known as “Blinks”.

The fans voiced out their thoughts on different social media platforms expressing their dismay and outrage over the alleged scam.

Ruth Costelo – the Trade secretary – stated that DTI is also looking to file charges vs Shopee for violating the Consumer Act on Sales Promo.

She explained the case in her statement:

“So it’s a clear violation on the part of Shopee kung hindi niya naibigay yung kaniyang commitment to allow them free access and autograph or photos with Blackpink. We are going to file formal charges against Shopee and then kailangan din nila i-compensate ‘yung winners.”

[So it’s a clear violation on the part of Shopee if they failed to provide for their commitment to allow them (the fans) free access and autograph of photos with Blackpink. We are going to file formal charges against Shopee and then they also have to provide compensation for the winners.]

The promo began last month as Shopee announced that the online shoppers with the most spending on their online market platform will win. The top 40 spenders are supposed to get autographs from the group’s members.

Initially, the guidelines posted by Shopee stated that the top 58 spenders within the time span given from May 11 to May 25 will receive tickets for the meet and greet event. Given that they have affirmed their orders by June 1.

This is according to an article from News5.

The disappointed fans insinuated that Shopee made changes to the rules at the last minute. The new rule states that only the orders that are delivered by May 25 will be counted.

That is all there is to it, at least for now. We’ll post updates as soon as we got them.
