Baguio Government Urges DPWH To Speed Up Repair Of Kennon Road

Repair And Reopening Of Kennon Road Is Essential And Must Be Prioritized, Says Baguio LGU To DPWH

BAGUIO – The local government unit of Baguio suggests the Department of Public Works and Highway to finish repair of Kennon road ASAP to open to vehicles.

Mayor Mauricio Domogan stressed that the opening of Kennon will contribute to the reduction of congestion of traffic on Marcos highway and other major roads in Baguio.

The city is currently preparing for a surge of visitors for the Panagbenga festival in February, the annual alumni homecoming of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA), and Holy Week.

According to Manila Bulletin, Domogan said that the DPWH has no reason to delay the reopening of Kennon road, citing that it was immediately repaired after it received damage from natural calamities that trace back to the July 16, 1990 earthquake.

The mayor further said that the road has been closed for too long and the repair is on a snail’s pace. He added that if they continue to close the road,
it will create a negative impact on the city’s tourism industry.

As per the report, Domogan said that it is illogical for DPWH to say that it is the central office that is empowered to reopen the road as that would make regional office practically useless.

As identified by DPWH and the Bureau of Design, nine sections of Kennon required rehabilitation after they were heavily damaged by the month-long monsoon rains last August, Supertyphoon Ompong in September and Tropical Storm Rosita in October.

Kennon road remaind as the shortest route to and from Baguio since it takes less than an hour travelling via this 23-kilometer road.
