Pentagon: US Warship Spotted Sailing In Spratly Island

US Warship Spotted Sailing In Spratly Island, Pentagon Says

Pentagon said that a US warship was spotted sailing off the disputed Spratly Island in the South China Sea claimed by Beijing.

On Sunday (September 30, 2018), an American warship sailed throughout the waters near the South China Sea area claimed by China.

An official said that the operations of the US military are in accordance with the law showing that the United States can sail wherever allowed by the international law.

“Guided-missile destroyer USS Decatur conducted a freedom of navigation operation. Decatur sailed within 12 nautical miles of Gaven and Johnson reefs in the Spratly Islands,” the official said.

The official explained that there was no reaction from Beijing, which claims the entire Spratly chain.

The law recognizes the 12-mile distance as the constituting territorial waters of a landmass.

Meanwhile, a similar US operation last July 2018 in the Paracel islands (north of Spratly Islands) prompted raging China to launch fighter jets and military vessels.

China was claiming most parts of the South China Sea although various nations including the Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia, and Vietnam are claiming parts of it.
