The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) confirmed that a Magnitude 4 earthquake hit Sagada, Mountain Province on Wednesday, August 30, 2017, at exactly 11:34 a.m. prompting the authorities to suspend classes in Bontoc.

The Magnitude 4 earthquake which struck off the coast of Sagada in Mountain Province was tectonic in origin and it hit at a depth of 5 kilometers.
According to its bulletin, there’s no immediate damage and aftershock reported as of press time.
Phivolcs noted that Magnitude 4 earthquake is “felt generally by people indoors and by some people outdoors. Light sleepers are awakened. Vibration is felt like a passing of heavy truck. Hanging objects swing considerably. Dinner, plates, glasses, windows and doors rattle. Floors and walls of wood framed buildings creak. Standing motor cars may rock slightly. Liquids in containers are slightly disturbed. Water in containers oscillate strongly. Rumbling sound may sometimes be heard.”
Meanwhile, Mayor Franklin Odsey suspended the afternoon classes in all elementary and high schools in Bontoc town.
According to an executive order which was published online, the Bontoc mayor cited the “anxiety and fear” due to “sudden tremor felt this morning” in suspension of classes.
On Social media, netizens reported that the earthquake was also felt in various areas including Baguio City.

According to a report published by Inquirer.net, the Bontoc Fire Station alerted their residents via Facebook noting, “THIS IS NOT A DRILL. Stay on the alert. Be safe.”
