Ferdinand Marcos Also Accused Others Of Rebellion, Senator Risa Hontiveros Says

Senator Risa Hontiveros said that the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos also used the same tactic of accusing others by rebellion.

On Saturday (June 10, 2017), Hontiveros said that accusing someone of committing rebellion is not a new thing. She also cited some instances where former nation leaders such as Ferdinand Marcos and Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo of accusing other of abetting rebellion.

The senator released her statement a few days after the Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte asked about the possibility of Hontiveros abetting rebellion.

Hontiveros cited the democracy defenders like Soc Rodrigo, Lorenzo Tanada and Ka Pepe Diokno who were accused by Ferdinand Marcos of abetting rebellion. She also said that former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo accused a journalist named Tina Panganiban-Perez of abetting rebellion after performing his duty.

She said that Sara Duterte accused her of abetting rebellion on her Facebook post. She also said that the president’s daughter might react to the fake news seems appears like she was protecting the Maute terror group, which is now making rounds online.

The lawmaker also explained that she even publicly condemned the terrorist group for the act of terrorism and criminality in Marawi City. She does not consider Maute group as a rebel, instead, they called them as a terrorist.

“In my long years as a member of the government panel for the peace process, the principle has always been to set a very high bar for characterizing a given incident as rebellion because history has demonstrated repeatedly how governments use the label of rebellion to justify the abuse of state power to silence dissent,” said by Hontiveros quoted by Inquirer.

Hontiveros also explained that the accusation might have been used against her to silent her voice and voices of others to hide the truth about martial law.
