Lawmakers React To Robredo’s Resignation From Duterte Cabinet

The lawmakers had varied reactions on the sudden resignation of Vice-President Leni Robredo as a member of the Cabinet of President Duterte.

The lawmakers in the Philippine Congress reacted to the sudden resignation of Vice President Leni Robredo as the chairman of the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council (HUDCC), which was allegedly because of the controversial order of President Rodrigo Duterte.

House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez, leader of lawmakers in the House of Representatives, that Vice President Robredo was compelled to leave the Cabinet and did not just resign out of personal will.

When asked about Leni Robredo’s pronouncement that she will resign as HUDCC head, Speaker Alvarez said that “considering the situation, I think she was fired”.

Meanwhile, Senator Panfilo Lacson said that the Malacañang Palace’s actuation of asking the Vice President not to attend the Cabinet meetings anymore can be considered a “not-too-subtle way of telling her that she is not welcome to be a part of the family”.

Lacson pushes the issue to be clarified before the public to avoid any misunderstanding with regards to Robredo’s resignation.

Senator Francis Escudero, on the other hand, said that the resignation is a voluntary act that is “personal to one resigning”.

Though he respects Robredo’s decision, he cannot help but be saddened that this early, the Duterte administration will be in for a rough political time in 2017, which could affect the economy and capability to do what needs to be done.

One of the lawmakers who are allies of Robredo in the Liberal Party, Dinagat Rep. Kaka Bag-ao, expressed his support to the vice president’s resignation.

Bag-ao said that he full supports her decision to leave the Cabinet, which is yet another proof of Robredo’s consistency with the principles she has shown long before being chosen by the people into the government.

Also one of his ally lawmakers, Ifugao Rep. Teddy Baguilat, said that it is due time that the Liberal Party of former President Benigno Simeon Aquino III close ranks and form the real opposition bloc of the Philippines.

In a statement released on Sunday, Vice President Robredo divulged that she received a text message on Saturday, allegedly coming from Cabinet Secretary Jun Evasco Jr., saying that President Duterte instructed through his executive assistant Christopher “Bong” Go for her to “desist from attending all Cabinet meetings” starting Monday.
