Michael Christian Martinez Live on TV5 for Figure Skating (Men’s) Short Program

The lone representative of the Philippines in the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics Michael Christian Martinez will see action tonight live on TV5 special Olympic coverage starting from 11:00 PM and ends at 3:30 AM.

The 17-year-old figure skater from Muntinlupa City is set to make history as the first figure skater not only from the Philippines but also from nay tropical country in the world competing in the Winter Olympics.

Michael Christian Martinez will perform against the world’s best skaters featuring a total of 30 skaters worldwide with the remaining Top 24 advances to the finals the following day.

The Filipino skater will perform fifth in the men’s figure skating short program. As the fifth performer, he will be in a tough spot, as skaters usually prefer to go later in the competition as judges tend to withhold higher scores for the early performers according to some sports observers.

The world’s most prominent figure skaters will be performing also competing against Michael Martinez, the youngest competitor in figure skating. Russian figure skating superstar Yevgeny Plushenko will perform seventh and he is a favorite to win the gold medal in his home country.

Aside from the Russian, Japanese figure skating superstar and world no. 1 skater Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan and third ranked Javier Fernandez of Spain will also see action in the competition tonight. The no. 2 ranked Patrick Chan who already won a Silver medal in the team figure skating category will also perform tonight.

The 30 best skaters from around the world will perform against Michael Martinez, based upon the latest records from the International Skating Union World Standing, the Filipino ranks no. 30 worldwide.
