Kyoto Protocol will be extended for another five years and will hammer out a deal to force the big polluters to limit its greenhouse emissions. With the announcement of the extension in which different countries have agreed already except for Canada the first country to withdraw from the Kyoto Protocol.

The news broke out after Environment minister Peter Kent announced the withdrawal of Canada on the global fight against greenhouse gas emissions. The main reason why Canada had withdrawn was the failure of its implementation.

Canada has long complained about the effectiveness of the Kyoto Protocol. According to them Kyoto is unworkable precisely because its excludes so many significant emitters.

Minister Kent was quoted as saying that, “As we’ve said, Kyoto for Canada is in the past … We are invoking our legal right to formally withdraw from Kyoto” Mr. Kent said after withdrawing from Kyoto Protocol.

Kyoto’s first phase will expire on the year 2012 and now will be extended until 2017. A fine of $44 billion will be charged to countries which will not comply with agreed Kyoto Protocol.

Mr. kent on the other hand promised to convince and would work towards a new global deal obliging all nations to cut output of green house emission.

China and India, two of the world’s largest economies and major polluters were not part of the Kyoto Protocol.

  1. The Canadian government should make sure that they were on the right tract. It’s dangerous moves for a rich country such as Canada.
