Jay Sonza Reacts on the National Costume of Miss Universe Philippine Celeste Cortesi
Veteran journalist Jay Sonza chides the Darna-inspired national costume of Celeste Cortesi at the Miss Universe.
Celeste Cortesi, the Philippines’ representative for Miss Universe, stunned beauty pageant viewers by arriving in a Darna-inspired dress during the national costume portion. While the majority of netizens praised the beauty queen, some couldn’t help but criticize her judgment.
Cortesi’s entry for the pageant’s national costume competition, which will be held in New Orleans, Louisiana on January 12, 2023, has gone viral on social media. Cortesi’s costume even drew the attention of the producers of ABS-Darna. CBN’s

However, experienced writer Jay Sonza cynically questioned if the revealing attire of the fictional figure is now classified as ‘national costume’. Sonza insisted that he is unaware.
“Parang hindi yata ako na-inform na ‘national costume’ na ang salawal, salong-dibdib at korona ni Darna. Pilipinas, Mabuhay!” the journalist said in his post.
Some of Sonza’s supporters agreed with the seasoned journalist. Other internet users defended Cortesi against the journalist, claiming that Darna is already ingrained in Filipino culture.
