Guide on Eye Problems Prevention amid “New Normal” Setting Now
EYE PROBLEMS – Dr. Buenjim Mariano gave some tips on how to prevent eye conditions of students amid the distance learning now.
The COVID-19 pandemic brought the world a different setting. It has greatly affected the healthcare system, the economy, the educational system, and the lifestyle of people as a whole.
With regards to the educational system, the Department of Education (DepEd) is currently delivering lessons to elementary and high school students via distance learning. It is through modules and online classes – far from the usual face-to-face classes in schools before the pandemic happened.
Several tertiary institutions have also yet to return to face-to-face class instructions. Most of the colleges and universities conduct classes through online.
Such moves are for the health and safety of the students amid the ongoing risks brought by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, under the distance learning, there are also things that need careful consideration. The frequent use of the gadget may result to eye problems and worsen those eye conditions that some students already has.
Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, a senior high school student, Errol Jireh Paguirigan, got an increased eye prescription from 250 to 450 amid the pandemic. According to him, it is due to online classes and playing mobile games as well. He experiences dizziness everytime he would remove his eyeglasses.
Dr. Buenjim Mariano, an ophthalmologist, expressed that more and more kids are coming to him complaining about eye pain and headache. He sees the use of gadgets as the main cause. Here are some tips from him on how to prevent eye problems:
- Parents and children must watch the television together so there would be social interaction.
- Parents must limit the screen time of their children.
- Observe the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, look at a faraway distance at least 20 feet away from where you are for 20 minutes.
- Do not forget to blink.
Dr. Mariano stressed that blinking is really necessary as it prevents the eyes from becoming dry. According to him, dry eyes would really result to a problem.
