This element is a chemical element with the symbol F and atomic number 9 hence, it is 9F. It falls under the halogen category in the periodic table of elements and is the category’s lightest halogen.
It exists as a highly toxic pale yellow diatomic gas at standard conditions. It is extremely reactive, with the exception for argon neon and helium, and is known as the most electronegative element.
It is ranked 24th in universal abundance and the 13th in terrestrial abundance. The element got its name from fluorite, in which it is its primary mineral source. It is also derived from the Latin verb fluo which means “flow”.
Uses

- Nuclear Fuel
- This element and its compounds, which are mostly uranium hexafluoride, are used in processing nuclear fuel.
- Fluorochemicals
- This, which also included many high-temperature plastics such as Teflon, were made using this element
- Dental Uses
- Compounds of this element, which includes sodium fluoride, are used in toothpaste and in drinking water in order to prevent dental cavities.
- Glass Making
- Hydrofluoric acid is capable of dissolving glass and is used to etch the glass in light bulbs and other related products.
- CFCs
- Chlorofluorocarbons or CFCs were initially used as refrigerants in air conditioning units and freezers. However, they are banned since they cause ozone depletion.
