If you’re curious, here’s the Dura Lex Sed Lex meaning, a statement currently trending online.
DURA LEX SED LEX MEANING – Amid the ABS-CBN issue, Dura Lex Sed Lex becomes a trend online and here’s what it means.
Laws are made in order not just to protect the people but also maintain peace and order in a society. Some laws might be difficult to obey but everyone must comply because Ignorantia legis non excusat (Ignorance of the law excuses no one).
Dura lex sed lex is a Latin term that means “it is harsh, but it is the law”. According Scribd, this statement originated during the 11th century as principle of canon law or church law. Lex is opposed to Jus where Lex is a law created by human while Jus is a natural law and “cannot be modified by an act of legislature.
This statement, as of this posting, is trending online following debates and arguments about the decision of National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) to shut down ABS-CBN after its 25-year franchise expired and their renewal case is still pending.
ABS-CBN is the biggest media company in the Philippines with 11,000 employees who also lost their jobs last night, May 5, after it officially signed off. It is the largest entertainment and media conglomerate in terms of revenue, operating income, net income, assets, equity, market capitalization, and number of employees.
The name ABS-CBN was formed after the merging of Alto Broadcasting System (ABS) and Chronicle Broadcasting Network (CBN). Many people supported NTC’s decision to order ABS-CBN go off air for they believed in Dura Lex Sed Lex but other people pushed “Salus populi est supreme lex” which means “Let the good of the people be the supreme law.”
