Leptospirosis Patients Confined In The NKTI Increase In Numbers

LEPTOSPIROSIS – There is an increase in numbers of leptospirosis admitted at NKTI (National Kidney and Transplant Institute) on Tuesday.

According to GMA News, the number rose from 28 to 32 patients who were confined inside the institute located in Quezon City. GMA’s James Agustin posted the said report on Twitter.

Agustin said that 6 out of 32 are now in critical condition, while 3 patients were confined at the ICU.

The institute’s gymnasium was used as a hospital ward by the institute itself in order to tend to the increasing number of patients affected by the disease.

The latest patient that was added in the fray named Neil, who is from Mandaluyong, was reportedly suffering from fever and stomach pain right after immersing himself in flooded waters. Neil also have his eyes turn yellowish.

As per the report, the Institute is currently calling those who are willing to donate blood for the patients. Vascular surgeon Dr. Zue Resurreccioin said that the victims need to undergo blood transfusions since they are currently low on blood banks.

Francisco Duque III, Health Secretary, said that as of January 1 right up to August 3, there is a total of at least 981 cases of leptospirosis were currently recorded.

The disease is a bacterial infection that is caused by the bacteria Leptospira spirochetes that came from the urine of infected animals, including rats.

The disease can infect humans via walking on contaminated floodwaters or ingesting infected food or water. Thus, the public was advised to avoid the flood waters as much as they can or if they can’t, they must take prophylaxis within 24-28 hours in order to avoid the infection.
