Hacker Steals NASA’s Restricted Data Using $35 Computer

NASA’s Restricted Data Stole By Unidentified Hacker Using Computer Worth $35

A hacker was able to steal the restricted data of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory network using a Raspberry Pi computer worth $35.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration revealed that a hacker was able steal sensitive data that forced the agency to impose temporary disconnection of space flight systems.

The audit report released last June 18 revealed that the attack happened in April 2018 and went undetected for over a year.

Restricted Data

The agency is now conducting an investigation to find the culprit who used a credit-card sized device called Raspberry Pi to steal the data.

Raspberry Pi could be plugged into television set and used to teach coding to young kids as well as promoting computing in developing nations.

NASA’s Office of Inspector General said that the hacker exfiltrates 23 files amounting to 500 megabytes of data prior to the detection.

Restricted Data

The attacker was able to access two of the three primary JPL networks holding the Curiosity Rover and information related to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations that restrict the export of US defense and military technologies.

Restricted Data

“Officials were concerned the cyberattackers could move laterally from the gateway into their mission systems, potentially gaining access and initiating malicious signals to human space flight missions that use those systems.” NASA said.
