The Federation of Solo Parents reported that there are an estimated 20 million solo parents in the Philippines and expected to increase this year.
Single parents frequently experience difficulties and hardships in raising their children especially when it comes to financial aspects.
Luckily, the Philippine government enacted laws recognizing the effort of the single parents through launching the Solo Parent ID offering benefits and discounts.
Here are the qualifications, steps, and requirements on how to obtain a Solo Parent ID.
Qualifications:
Solo Parent left alone due to the following circumstances:
- Due to death of spouse
- Spouse is detained or is serving sentence for a criminal conviction for at least one (1) year
- Physical and/or mental incapacity of spouse as certified by a public medical practitioner
- Legal separation or de facto separation from spouse for at least one (1) year, as long as he/she is entrusted with the custody of the children
- Declaration of nullity or annulment of marriage as decreed by a court or by a church as long as he/she is entrusted with the custody of the children
Unmarried mother/father who has preferred to keep and rear her/his child/children
A woman who gives birth as a result of crimes against chastity even without a final conviction of the offender provided that mother keeps and raises the child
Any other person who solely provides parental care and support to a child or children
Any family member who assumes the responsibility of the head of the family as a result of the death, abandonment, disappearance or prolonged absence of the parents or solo parent
Procedure:
Step 1:
- Get a barangay certificate at the barangay office
- Working solo parents should provide their latest Income Tax Return (ITR)
- Present proof of solo parents status including spouse’s death certificate, nullity of the medical certificate, and a certificate from Barangay Captain if the separation was not recognized by the court
- Bring the birth certificate of children
- Fill up Solo Parent ID application form
Step 2:
- Submit all necessary documents at the city’s social welfare and development office.
- If approved, applicants could get their ID after 30 days.
