Malacañang Palace has declared June 24, 2024, a special non-working day for the City of Manila.

On Wednesday (June 19, 2024), Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin signed Proclamation No. 599 emphasizing the importance of recognizing Manila’s deep-rooted heritage.

The proclamation aims to provide an opportunity for the residents to actively participate in the festivities marking the city’s 453rd founding anniversary. During this time, residents can take part in community events, visit historical places, watch cultural shows, and join other activities that remind everyone of Manila’s history.

“It is but fitting and proper that the people of the City of Manila be given full opportunity to participate in the occasion and enjoy the celebration,” the statement reads.

Manila was founded on June 24, 1571, by Miguel Lopez de Legazpi, who was a Spanish navigator and the first governor-general of the Philippines. This event was very important in the history of the country when it was under Spanish control.

Over time, Manila changed from being just a trading post into a city that is important for culture and business. This has helped shape the identity and growth of the Philippines.

In recent times, President Ferdinand Marcos made Manila the capital city on June 24, 1976. This decision made sure that Manila became the main place for the government and its offices.
