Vice Ganda won Box Office Hero at the 8th EDDYS Awards
Unkabogable Star Vice Ganda has this message to the critics who questioned the quality of his movies.
The comedian-host has been doing blockbuster movies for many years now. His entries for the Metro Manila Film Festival have gained the top spots when it came to blockbuster earnings.
However, it is also known that his movies have critics and he is aware of it. In his speech as he accepted his Box Office Hero at the 8th EDDYS of the Society of Philippine Entertainment Editors (SPEED), he mentioned his critics.
Vice Ganda said that there were those who were asking why there were a lot of people who still watched his movies, just like last year. His movie And The Breadwinner Is was the top-grossing film in the MMFF 2024.
The comedian-host also said that people raised their eyebrows and questioned the quality of his movies, based on the article in Bandera.
“Para sa mga ilang kritiko, para sa ilang mga feeling mas magagaling pa sa kritiko, sa mga umaarteng kritiko, ang mga pelikula ko raw ay walang kwenta, walang katuturan, slapstick, katsipan, puro kabaklaan, puro kabaduyan, bakyang-bakya,” Vice said.
However, he pointed out that people continue to watch his movies because his works could not pass the standards of his critics. For him, it is because his movies served as an escape for many Filipinos.
“‘Yung pelikula ko po ay ginagamit ng napakaraming masang Pilipino para maging instrumento para sila ay tumawa panandalian, tumawa’t humagalpak hanggang sa makalimutan nila ng ilang segundo kung ano ‘yung masakit, malungkot, at mahirap na sitwasyon ng kanilang pamumuhay araw-araw,” the comedian-host stressed.
Vice also said that many Filipinos go to the cinema to watch his movie and laugh at him to forget their sadness and, even for a while, forget their problems.
“Para kahit papaano ay makalimutan nilang malapit na silang mawalan ng pag-asa rito sa Pilipinas. Kahit ang mahal-mahal na ng pelikula,” he added.
Vice also pointed out that even though Filipinos are financially challenged, they still choose to watch his movies to have a short laugh, and they don’t want to be critics because they prioritize having fun with what they watch.
With this, Vice Ganda was thankful to the “masang Pilipino” who gave him so much love.
