Atong Ang: Netizens Discover Ramon Tulfo’s 2009 Column About Him

People online have resurfaced this column written by Ramon Tulfo about Atong Ang, which was published online in 2009.

Ramon Tulfo is a radio announcer, newspaper columnist, host, and broadcaster. As a newspaper columnist, he wrote for the Bulletin Today (now the Manila Bulletin) for almost a decade. In the 1980s, he moved to the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

Atong Ang

For Inquirer, in 2009, he published a column about what happened one night at a party when he encountered businessman Atong Ang.

At that time, he had written an item about the businessman, and on a Thursday evening, at a posh subdivision, they had an encounter. The item angered Ang, and amid the send-off party of a friend, they had a heated argument, exchanging words that led Ang to curse him.

And he was not to easily back down and just stay quiet. He talked back, and the businessman gestured to put his fist to his face. He failed to punch him, and this triggered him to take out the gun from his hip – a .38 snub-nose revolver. It was a dangerously odd object to bring to a party.

Luckily, a guest was able to put the gun away. He was lucky as someone who was unarmed. He wrote, “The guy was grandstanding because there were many people around. He knew he and I would be restrained.”

In the same column, he added that he was the same man who, at the height of his power, slapped men who had crossed him.

He slapped a congressman inside a cockfighting arena.
He slapped a high official of the Philippine Gaming Corp. (Pagcor) when he was losing in the casino.
He would berate top police officials in front of their subordinates.
All those people never fought back and just licked their wounds.
I hope he doesn’t draw a gun on me for the second time when we meet in public again.
