PNP Chief Says 81-Year-Old Man to Receive Compensation After Being Wrongfully Jailed

PNP chief said that an 81-year-old man who was wrongfully jailed for almost six months is now set to receive compensation.

The Philippine National Police Chief, General Nicolas Torre III reported that the elderly man who was wrongly arrested will receive monetary compensation.

The man, identified as Prudencio Cebu Calubid Jr., was arrested in December 2024 in Olongapo City. Authorities claimed he was a wanted peace consultant of the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP), facing charges such as robbery with double homicide, property damage, and multiple murders.

81-Year-Old Man

Calubid was first held at Camp Crame and later transferred to Manila City Jail. However, he strongly denied being the person in the arrest warrant. He presented several government IDs and documents to prove that he was not the same individual the police were looking for.

The elderly man’s daughter, Analyn Calubid, helped file a petition for a writ of habeas corpus, requesting his immediate release.

The Court of Appeals granted the petition, stating there was enough proof that Calubid was wrongly identified. They pointed out that official records clearly showed his true identity. The court criticized the police for relying mainly on internet searches and social media, instead of using verified government data.

The decision also questioned the lack of a proper investigation, saying it was wrong to present the arrest as a result of solid intelligence work. It emphasized the importance of respecting human rights during arrests and investigations.

With this ruling, Calubid has been freed, and the PNP confirmed he would be compensated for the wrongful arrest. The case serves as a reminder for authorities to always follow legal procedures and protect the rights of innocent citizens.
