Authorities Arrest 3 Mothers for Stealing Phones to Buy School Supplies

Three mothers were arrested in Barangay Commonwealth, Quezon City after allegedly stealing cellphones from two government employees.

On early Monday morning (June 9, 2025), the victims were on their way to work when the suspects approached and took their phones. Fortunately, bystanders saw the theft happen and quickly called for help from nearby traffic enforcers, according to Batasan Police Station Deputy Station Commander PMaj. Jerryzaldy Tugbo.

The suspects were later identified as two sisters aged 42 and 39, along with their 39-year-old friend. Police found that all three women had a history of theft. The oldest had been arrested six times, while the other two had also been jailed for similar crimes in the past.

“Yung biktima natin dito na dalawang babae, papasok sila sa trabaho nila, mga government employee… then itong apat na suspek natin, tinabihan sila, then nakita ng mga bystander yung ginawa nilang pagkuha sa cellphone. Then yung isang bystander, dahil malapit lang yung Traffic Sector 5, humingi ng tulong doon,” Tugbo said.

Based on the report, the suspects used a common tactic. Two of them would distract the victim while the third quickly passed the stolen item to another person in the group. They were said to be part of a team operating in areas like Manila, Quezon City, Caloocan, and San Jose del Monte, Bulacan. One of their accomplices is still being hunted by authorities.

“Sa modus nila, ang ginagawa nila, yung dalawang babae didikit sa biktima nila. Then pag nakuha yung cellphone, pinapasa na doon sa mga kasamahan… may grupo po sila, and ang mga ito ay lumalaro sa mga lugar ng Manila, Quezon City, Caloocan, and sa San Jose Del Monte Bulacan,” Tugbo added.

Police recovered two phones worth P6,000 and P5,000 from the suspects. During questioning, the women said they committed the crime out of desperation. They claimed they only wanted to buy school supplies for their children and had no ties to any gang.

One of the suspects said they planned to sell the phones to neighbors for quick cash. Now in police custody, the three women are facing theft charges. Despite their regret, they must now face the consequences of their actions.
