Amid Incoming Congress Transition, House Speaker Martin Romualdez Poised To Retain Post
House Speaker Martin Romualdez gained the backing of 285 solons including some members of the Liberal Party according to Deputy Speaker Jay-Jay Suarez.
The 20th Congress is set to open more than a month from now. Currently, there are already talks on the possibility of a change in leadership in the Senate and the House of Representatives. In the upper chamber, senator-elect Tito Sotto admitted that he is open to be the Senate president again if he has the numbers.

Senate Pres. Chiz Escudero appeared unbothered by the statement of Sotto who is a former Senate chief. Amid the speculations, the Duterte bloc as well as senator-elect Erwin Tulfo claimed that both Sotto and Escudero wanted to talk to them.
With regards to the chief of the House of Representatives, House Speaker Martin Romualdez is poised to retain his position. Based on a report on Manila Bulletin, 285 solons back the House Speaker.

Deputy Speaker Quezon 2nd district Rep. David “Jay-Jay” Suarez claimed that 285 congressmen support the retention of House Speaker Martin Romualdez and 278 of them have already signed the formal declaration of their support to Romualdez. He also claimed that the 278 congressmen include members of the Liberal Party.

Based on the report, Suarez claimed that four (4) out of six (6) members of the Liberal Party support Romualdez as House Speaker. He stressed that they are “now part of the larger movement for legislative continuity and national stability”.
“Speaker Romualdez has earned the trust of the current and incoming members of the House through principled, results-oriented leadership. What we are witnessing is no longer just support from traditional allies—it’s a political groundswell cutting across the entire spectrum,” the Deputy Speaker said.
Based on the report, Deputy Speaker Quezon 2nd district Rep. Jay-Jay Suarez also stressed that House Speaker Martin Romualdez is abiding the call of Pres. Bongbong Marcos for a leadership that is shown based on results. The supermajority bloc that backs Romualdez includes his political party, the Lakas-CMD, the National Unity Party (NUP), the Nacionalista Party (NP), the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP), Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC), the Party-list Coalition Foundation Inc. (PCFI), and now, the LP.
Prior to the 2025 Elections, presidential sister and Sen. Imee Marcos who was seeking reelection launched a fierce campaign video wherein she claimed that the government is not ran by a Marcos but a Romualdez and an Araneta. The Senator claimed that there are allegedly some of her colleagues in the Senate who wants her to be the Senate president.
