Student-Athlete Dies After Boxing Match at SCUAA Games in Camiguin
A student-athlete has passed away after completing in a boxing match at SCUAA games in Mambajao, Camiguin.
A young boxing athlete, 20-year-old Marc Mateo Castillo from Occidental Mindoro State College, sadly passed away after competing in the State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (SCUAA) National Games.
Marc represented the Southern Tagalog Region and went up against an opponent from the National Capital Region on April 26. The match ended in the third round through a referee-stopped contest.
Right after the match, he received immediate medical attention at the venue and was rushed to Camiguin General Hospital. Despite the doctors’ efforts, he was declared dead.
Marc’s school expressed deep sympathy and support for his family and loved ones during this difficult time. School officials have reached out personally to the family to offer assistance and ensure proper arrangements are made to bring Marc’s body home.
“The OMSC community conveys its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Mr. Castillo. The entire OMSC community shares in this period of mourning and stands in solidarity with those affected by this tragic loss,” the school said.
The Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges (PASUC), which oversees the SCUAA games, confirmed that all standard safety protocols were followed during the match. Both boxers wore proper protective gear, and licensed officials supervised the bout. A medical team and a ring doctor were also present at the venue.
PASUC reported that Marc suffered a strong blow to the nose during the fight, which led to his collapse. Medical staff provided quick first aid and sent him to the hospital for further care, but sadly, he did not survive. Medical examiners are still determining the exact cause of death.
Fellow students from the gym where Marc trained described him as humble and kind, someone who always greeted others with a warm smile.
