Woman Seriously Injured After She Was Struck by Falling Jackfruit in Bukidnon

A woman in Maramag, Bukidnon was seriously injured after she was struck on the nape by a four-kilogram jackfruit or locally known as ‘Langka’.

The female victim identified as Ruth was left fighting for her life due to severe spinal injuries.  According to Ruth’s daughter, Lily, the incident happened while they were doing laundry.

Ruth went back to check if the washing machine had completed its cycle when the jackfruit fell directly on her. Hearing the sound, Lily turned around to see her mother lying motionless on the ground.

In a rush to save Ruth, they transported her via tricycle to the nearest hospital, where doctors discovered she had sustained significant spinal cord damage. Medical personnel at the Bukidnon Provincial Hospital in Maramag stated that the injury had also affected her brain, causing critical respiratory distress that required immediate intubation.

Kritikal talaga, ma’am. Kasi ‘yong pasyente dumating dito naapektuhan ‘yong utak niya. Kailangan i-intubate ‘yong patient. Talagang impending respiratory failure,” said Dr. Edmund Garcia.

With no available specialists at the hospital, Ruth was transferred to the Northern Mindanao Medical Center in Cagayan de Oro. While her condition eventually stabilized, she was left paralyzed due to the extent of her neurological injuries, as confirmed by a spine surgeon.

Currently, the family is reaching out to the public for financial assistance. Those who wish to help can deposit their contributions to the following account: Land Bank – Maramag, Bukidnon, Lourivell R. Celoso, Account Number 2106251749.

Meanwhile, the family has chosen not to file a complaint against the landowner where the jackfruit tree stood. However, to prevent similar incidents, they decided to have the tree removed.
