Person of Interest in Murder of SEA Games Medalist Mervin Guarte Identified Through CCTV
MERVIN GUARTE – A CCTV footage capture a person of interest (POI) in the murder of SEA Games multi-medalist.
On Tuesday morning (January 7, 2025), Mervin Maligo Guarte, 33, a celebrated SEA Games gold medalist and Philippine Air Force member, was fatally stabbed while sleeping at a friend’s house in Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro.
The crime happened at Barangay Kagawad Dante Abel’s home at Sitio Pinagkaisahan, Barangay Camilmil, around 4:30 a.m.

Guarte, a Pinoy athlete with gold medals in the 2019 and 2023 SEA Games, along with multiple other achievements, had traveled to the area for a gathering. Investigations revealed that he had been drinking with friends until the early hours before falling asleep.
While in the sala, he was stabbed in the chest by an unknown suspect. The victim managed to seek help from neighbors, who rushed him to a nearby hospital before transferring him to Mindoro Medical Center.
Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries. Investigators recovered the knife used in the crime and are interviewing individuals present at the gathering to identify the suspect and determine the motive.
Oriental Mindoro Governor Humerlito “Bonz” Dolor condemned the killing and directed authorities to resolve the case swiftly.
Recently, a person of interest (POI) in the murder of Mervin Guarte has been identified through CCTV footage. The video elicited reactions from the online community.
The video shows the POI, a tricycle driver known to the victim, walking towards Guarte’s house shortly before the crime occurred. Minutes later, the POI is seen leaving the area, raising suspicions about his involvement.
Authorities revealed that the POI allegedly held a long-standing grudge against the athlete, which may have driven the fatal act.
