From low pressure area (LPA) to Tropical Depression Querubin, here’s an update from PAGASA.

TROPICAL DEPRESSiON QUERUBIN – State weather bureau PAGASA placed Davao Oriental under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1.

The low pressure area east of Mindanao strengthened into a tropical depression called Querubin which is about a week prior to Christmas. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) released an update about it and accordingly, it was spotted 215 kilometers east southeast of Tagum City, Davao del Norte, or 245 km east of General Santos City.

Based on the update, it is moving south-southwestward slowly with maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 55 kph. As per the 5 PM advisory, it affects Davao Oriental directly where rains with gusty winds are experienced.

It also affects Eastern Visayas, Caraga, and the rest of the Davao Region.

“Querubin is forecast to move east northeastward while slowly moving away from Davao Region over the next 12 hours before turning northward by tomorrow (18 December). This weather disturbance will then traverse Mindanao and Palawan area from tomorrow afternoon until Sunday (22 December) afternoon as a remnant low,” PAGASA said.

Signal No. 1 may be expected in at least 36 hours and during the occurrence, TCWS 1 is the highest wind signal. However, re-intensification into a tropical depression after traversing Mindanao or Palawan is not ruled out.

Meanwhile, there have been a series of typhoons that hit the Philippines in less than a month. A couple have left devastating aftermath to several areas in the country. Many lives were claimed and millions worth of damages to properties have also been listed. These cyclones caused uprooted trees, damaged properties and buildings, and pulled down power lines.

These cyclones were Kristine (Trami), Leon (Kong-Rey), Marce (Yinxing), Nika (Toraji), Ofel (Usagi), and Pepito.
