Phivolcs Marks 34th Anniversary of Devastating 1990 Luzon Quake

PHIVOLCS – The state volcanology agency commemorates the 34th anniversary of the devastating 1990 Luzon earthquake.

Earthquakes can have a wide range of effects, from immediate physical damage to long-term socio-economic impacts. Ground shaking can cause buildings, bridges, and other structures to collapse, leading to injuries and fatalities. This occurs when the ground surface breaks and shifts along a fault line.

Underwater earthquakes can generate tsunamis, which are large sea waves that can travel across oceans.

On Tuesday (July 16, 2024), the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology is commemorating the 34th anniversary of the devastating earthquake that hit the northern and central parts of Luzon.

On July 16, 1990, at exactly 4:26 p.m., a 7.8-magnitude earthquake shook northern and central Luzon. The powerful tremor took over 1,200 lives and caused around P10 billion in damage, making it one of the most destructive earthquakes in Philippine history.

The volcanology agency recorded the quake’s epicenter was in Rizal, Nueva Ecija, near Cabanatuan City. The powerful tremors cause severe damage to cities like Baguio, Cabanatuan, Dagupan, and San Fernando. Even Metro Manila wasn’t spared, with several buildings sustaining damage.

One of the most notable results was a 120-kilometer-long crack along the Digdig section of the Philippine Fault. The earthquake also caused collapse and landslides, which led to destruction and chaos.

As we remember this horrific incident, we must honor the lives lost and recognize the lessons learned. The 1990 Luzon earthquake emphasized the importance of disaster preparedness and sturdy, resilient buildings.

It points out why we need earthquake-resistant construction rules and emergency measures to keep people safe.

PHIVOLCS invites everyone to share their experiences and stories about the 1990 Luzon earthquake. By sharing, people can learn from the past and build a culture of preparedness and resilience.
