Man Dies After Being Hit by Motorcycle While Crossing Nagtahan Bridge in Manila
A 50-year-old man died after being hit by a motorcycle while crossing the Nagtahan Bridge in Sampaloc, Manila.
On Monday (June 3, 2024), the incident happened at around 4:30 PM on the southbound lane of Lacson Avenue, heading up to Nagtahan.
Manila Police District Vehicular Traffic Investigation Section head PMaj. Jaime Gonzales explained a pedestrian crossed the road before going up the Nagtahan flyover. Unfortunately, he was hit by a motorcycle.
The impact was so strong that both the pedestrian and the motorcycle driver were thrown into the air.
The victim, identified by his father Rodolfo Senovilla, was on his way home after selling scrap at a junk shop. The motorcycle driver was also heading home from work. CCTV footage revealed that the motorcycle was speeding, and the driver did not see the pedestrian crossing.
PMaj. Gonzales explained that the victim was a barangay auxiliary, often running errands for the barangay. At the time, he was pulling a cart when the incident happened.
The collision caused both the victim and the driver to be thrown off their positions. They were immediately taken to different hospitals. The pedestrian was declared dead on arrival, while the motorcycle driver sustained fractures and remains hospitalized.
The victim’s father recounted, “Pagkalipad niya bumagsak siya sa island doon tumama ‘yung ulo niya. Bali ‘yung tuhod niya, ‘yung isa niyang paa bali, ‘yung balikat niya may tama din. ‘Yung dibdib niya, pinasok na ng hangin. Doon siya naano.”
The victim’s family decided not to press charges after the motorcycle driver’s relatives apologized and offered financial assistance.
Despite no formal complaint, the police will still submit a recommendation to the Land Transportation Office (LTO) for administrative action.
The Authorities remind the public to use designated pedestrian crossings or footbridges to avoid such incidents.
