Different events happen at college graduation ceremonies. There are singing by the graduates, the giving of inspiring messages by the invited guest speakers, the giving of awards and certificates to the graduates, the pledge, and a lot more.

At graduation ceremonies, parents are usually invited to be with their sons and daughters. There are even cases when parents join the processional march of the graduates. The proud parents also usually bring gifts and bouquets for the graduates. However, it will surely be surprising most especially for people who are not living in China to see a graduate carrying a bouquet of roasted duck aside from a bouquet of flowers.

Based on a viral video posted by T-Time on social media, the graduate holding a bouquet of roasted duck is an outgoing student of a university in Guangdong province, China. She was holding a bouquet of flowers in one hand and a bouquet of roasted duck in the other.

The roasted duck is wrapped in a brown paper. Based on a report on Pep, the video of the graduate went viral on Douyin which is an equivalent of the video-sharing platform TikTok in China.

While a bouquet of roasted duck may come as a surprise to other people, it is not uncommon in Guangdong Province as it is a traditional Cantonese delicacy. Based on the article, in the Chinese culture, the roasted duck means “success and good fortune”. It may also mean “completeness and wholeness”.

Roasted duck is also a food staple in the Lunar New Year. It is believed to symbolize full moon most especially when it is served whole.
