DepEd Issues Statement on Student Who Ends Own Life After Receiving Line of 6 Grades From Teacher

MAASIN, ILOILO – DepEd has issued an official statement on a student who ended his own life after receiving failing grades from his teacher.

On May 10, 2024 (Friday), Grade 10 student Joemarie Castor of Siwalo National High School reportedly end his own life after being given a line of 6 grades by his teacher. His inability to comply with his teacher’s requirements adds to his frustration.

Due to financial limitations, the student finds it difficult to complete the cooking project assigned by the teacher. The teacher requested that the project be finished, but Toto didn’t comply because his family couldn’t afford the ingredients.

The 16-year-old student received grades as low as 64 in the first quarter, 69 in the second quarter, and 66 in the third quarter for the subject of Home Economics and Livelihood Education after being unable to complete his teacher’s standards.

After receiving the line of 6 grades, Joemarie’s lifeless body was found hanging from a tree near a well.

On Sunday (May 12, 2024), the Department of Education issued an official statement on the issue, extending its condolences to the family of the young learner.

The Siwalo National High School’s Child Protection Committee will launch psychosocial support for the affected educators and students. The school will also cooperate with the authorities.

The Education Department urged the public to avoid spreading unconfirmed reports as a sign of respect for the family.

“12 May 2024 – The Department of Education (DepEd) extends its heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of a Grade 10 learner of Maasin, Iloilo, who sadly passed away last May 10. The Child Protection Committee of the said school is set to conduct psychosocial interventions for affected peers and teachers close to the said learner. The concerned school shall likewise coordinate with the appropriate authorities on the matter. In the meantime, while we wait for the official police report and findings, we appeal to the public to refrain from spreading unconfirmed narratives as a sign of respect for the family in this time of grief. Thank you.

  1. Para po sa lahat, ang pagkamatay ng bata ay hindi dahil sa kulang ng GMRC. Hindi rin dahilan ng pagpapakamay ng bata ang pagiging palamura ng dating presidente!
    Pati ang pagkamatay ng bata ay pinupulitika ng mga taong kulang ang kamulatan sa totoong pagkamatay ng bata….

    Ang totoong dahilan ng pagkadismaya ng bata ay wala siyang pere na pambili sa mga project na ipinapagawa ng kanyang teacher.

    Na Ang totoong dahilan ng kanyang frustrations ay ang usapin ng kahirapan. Ano ang ibibili Niya ng project kung walang pera na ibinibigay ng kanyang mga magulang dahil sa napakamahal ng mga presyo ng mga basic commodities ngayon.
