Here’s what really happened to the sister of Kim Chiu, Lakam, last year.
Kapamilya actress Kim Chiu finally opened up about what happened last year to Lakam, her older sister, and why she fell into a coma.
In April 2023, actress-host Kim Chiu revealed that her sister got hospitalized. At that time, she did not reveal yet what really happened but she disclosed that what happened was seriously dangerous.
Kim asked prayers for Lakam, her sister. She wrote, “Kung may hihingin man akong regalo sa inyo ngayon yun ay prayers para sa ate Lakam ko.”
Lakam was unconscious for some time but after weeks, she gained consciousness which they regarded as a miracle. When she woke up, Lakam thanked Kim for not giving up on her. She is thankful that she did not leave her side during those critical days of her life.
When she woke up, the first five days, she remained in a critical condition despite gaining consciousness. She was not able to talk, hear, and see but Kim’s“positivity and strength” was one of the reasons she was able to overcome her condition.
What really happened to Lakam
During that time, Lakam fell into a comatose state and was diagnosed with a bacterial meningitis. She was in a coma for seven days and based on the doctor, the case was hopeless. They were even told to be prepared for the worst.
Kim was even asked to sign a “DNR order” or “do-not-resuscitate (DNR) effect” or “do not attempt resuscitation”.
According to the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention, this is a serious condition. Some infected people die which can happen in a few hours. However, those who survived, may suffer from permanent disabilities like brain damage, hearing loss, and learning disabilities.
Recalling the moment she was asked to sign the DNR, she shared, “Gumuho yung mundo ko. Hindi ako nakapasok talaga sa work. Nahirapan ako. Lahat kasi siya [Lakam] ang may alam, e. Naiwan niya ako nang hanging. ‘Anong gagawin ko?’ So, pray talaga.”
With prayers and strong faith, her sister recovered.
