Kaya hindi kami sasama riyan,” Peñano said.

According to Peñano, Jonathan became upset when their colleagues tried to stop him. He insisted and jumped into the river.

Maya-maya sabi niya ‘Huwag kang sumunod ah.’ Sinakal niya po ako. Maya-maya tumalon siya,” Peñano added.

Jonathan swam for about 30 minutes, with his colleagues witnessing him floating and lifting his head above water. Eventually, he drifted towards the middle of the river, and they lost sight of him. His cousin and other colleagues attempted to rescue him.

The Philippine Coast Guard and Manila DRRMO were called to the scene, but the search and rescue operation proved challenging for the PCG divers. After an hour, Jonathan’s lifeless body was recovered from the river.
