Phivolcs Releases Bulletin about the Earthquake Today in Ilocos Sur, January 3, 2024

EARTHQUAKE – The Phivolcs recorded a 4.8 magnitude quake in Ilocos Sur today, Wednesday, January 3, 2024.

Following the 4.7 magnitude earthquake that hit Sarangani a week ago, another significant quake was recently recorded by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) in another province. According to the agency, the quake that hit Ilocos Sur today had a magnitude of 4.8.

The earthquake today that struck Ilocos Sur, Wednesday, January 3, 2024, at 03:59 a.m., was tectonic in origin.

According to Phivolcs, the earthquake that hit a part of Ilocos Sur was located at 17.30°North, 119.82°East – 066 km South 65° West of Caoayan. It had a depth of focus of 015 kilometers.

Phivolcs stated in its bulletin that damages are not expected from the said quake as well as aftershocks. According to the quake-recording agency, the following intensities were felt in these areas:

Intensity II

  • Santa Maria, Ilocos Sur

Intensity III

  • Salcedo, Magsingal, and Sigay, Ilocos Sur
  • Bangar, La Union

Intensity IV

  • San Vicente, City of Vigan, and City of Candon, Ilocos Sur
