#WalangPasok: Class Suspensions for Saturday (Sept 23) Due to Volcanic Smog

Class Suspensions for Saturday (September 23, 2023)

WALANG PASOK – Several local government units declared class suspensions in some areas due to the volcanic smog.

Batangas is still enveloped in thick volcanic smog or vog, with some residents falling ill. Concerns are rising about the potential effects of vog if Taal Volcano’s activity continues in the coming days. Vog has been lingering around the volcano since the start of September.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reminds everyone to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities and to wear face masks when going outside. Vog can also potentially lead to acid rain, which could affect crops and even the roofs of houses and buildings.

Class Suspensions

On Friday (September 22, 2023), the Department of Health (DOH) declared a code white alert status for all hospitals in Region IV-A (Calabarzon) in response to the volcanic smog due to Taal Volcano’s ongoing unrest.

Medical workers are on standby for immediate mobilization under the code white status to guarantee hospitals are ready to respond to crises.

Vog spread over the region, including Cavite and Batangas, causing eye discomfort, chest tightness or pain, and an itchy throat in some inhabitants. It also resulted in the suspension of school classes.

Class Suspensions

According to the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO), sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions harmed at least 22 municipalities and four cities in Batangas.

Large plumes reaching heights of up to 2,400 meters were seen erupting from Taal Volcano and moving west-southwest and southwest. Some classes and flights were also canceled as a result of the haze.
