Controversy stirred regarding the performance of Pura Luka Vega and this is her statement about it.
PURA LUKA VEGA – Drag queen Pura Luka Vega finally responds to the loud buzz her “Ama Namin” performance has created online.
A video of a recent performance by Filipino drag queen Pura Luka Vega went viral online and created an uproar among people online. In the video, Luka is seen wearing her signature drag look as she performed the upbeat and remixed version of “Ama Namin” (“Our Father”) before a crowd.
In a previous article, this was greatly condemned online and some even called it blasphemous.
Senators also reacted and called the performance “regrettable”. Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri said that there was “misuse and abuse of our freedom of expression that borders on criminal activity”.
The drag queen can accordingly be charged under Article 201 of the Revised Penal Code which punishes offending a race or religion “in the performance of obscene or indecent plays, scenes, acts or shows”.
In a Tweet on June 13, the drag queen finally spoke about her performance which lead to an uproar online.
She expressed that she understands her performance was deemed “blasphemous, offensive, or regrettable” but she should accordingly not be told how to do her drag or how to practice her faith.
The post said:
I understand that people call my performance blasphemous, offensive or regrettable. However, they shouldn’t tell me how I practice my faith or how I do my drag. That performance was not for you to begin with. It is my experience and my expression, of having been denied my rights.
