Extension of SIM Registration Deadline Supported by DTI

Update on Calls for Extension of SIM Registration Deadline amid Nearing End

EXTENSION OF SIM REGISTRATION DEADLINE – The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) supported the calls for the extension of deadline.

In the Philippines, the registration of SIM cards is mandated by law now. It was the first bill signed by President Bongbong Marcos into law since he assumed office. The bill was crafted in the pursuit to curb the incidents of scamming and other related ill behaviours done with the use of SIM cards.

The implementing rules and regulations (IRR) were crafted and released and a deadline was set by the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) regarding the SIM registration. It was set until April 26.

However, amid the nearing deadline of SIM regaistration, there are calls for extension. Several telecommunication providers have crafted different ways so users can register their SIM cards. The registration can be done online or a SIM card user can also seek assistance at the stores.

Previously, amid the calls for extension of the SIM card registration deadline, the DICT released a statement emphasizing that there are no orders yet for an extended deadline for the registration of SIM cards.

Amid the nearing deadline for SIM card registration, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) joined the call for an extension of the SIM registration deadline. Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, the DTI noted the importance of SIM registration in digital transactions.

Trade Secretary Alfredo Pascual stressed that the registration of SIM cards will help in the country’s shift to digital payments. He emphasized that it is a “major concern” if the registration is cut and not all SIMs have been registered.
