EMSC Logs 7.2 Magnitude Earthquake in Papua New Guinea Region

EARTHQUAKE TODAY – The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) recorded a 7.2 magnitude earthquake in New Guinea, Papua New Guinea region early on Monday.

Earthquakes are among the natural incidents that are hard to predict accurately. They can happen both on land and on water. The danger of the quake shaking the grounds below the bodies of water is the possibility of igniting a tsunami, a long high sea wave. It is also referred as a submarine landslide.

Thus, during strong wakes, quake-recording bodies releases bulletins to inform the people if there is a threat of tsunami or none. Almost all countries across the globe have their respective quake-recording bodies.

Aftershocks may follow strong earthquakes and these can be strong aftershocks or those that can hardly be felt. Today, the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) recorded a 7.2 magnitude quake in Papua New Guinea region.

Based on a report GMA News Online, the 7.2 magnitude earthquake that struck New Guinea, Papua New Guinea region had a depth of 80 kilometers or 49.71 miles. The United States Tsunami Warning System said that there is no threat of tsunami after the strong quake in New Guinea.
