Sen Robin Padilla Resolution Defends Ex-President Rodrigo Duterte from ICC Probe

Senator Robin Padilla files a resolution to defend ex-president Rodrigo Duterte from the probe by the International Criminal Court (ICC).

The Senator introduced legislation to safeguard former President Rodrigo Duterte from an ICC inquiry on the country’s drug war. Duterte was charged with crimes against humanity by the International Criminal Court for his violent drug campaign.

Padilla insisted on the “unqualified defense of former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte, the 16th President of the Republic of the Philippines, in any investigation or prosecution by the ICC” in Senate Resolution 488. The resolution states that the Philippines has a “functioning and independent” judicial system.

Padilla also cited in the resolution what Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla claimed that the ICC’s willingness to examine the country’s “crimes against humanity” was a “insult” and “absolutely unacceptable”. Nonetheless, Padilla noted that the Duterte administration has achieved “amazing results” in its anti-drug campaign.

He also stated that the Duterte administration’s “holistic and whole-nation strategy” to combating the drug epidemic and insurgency had “significantly enhanced” peace and order in the Philippines. Padilla stated that the Duterte administration’s campaigns increased the country’s exports and investments.

It should be noted that House Deputy Speaker Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo recently led the passage of the exact resolution supporting Duterte in the House of Representatives. Based on the report, several legislators introduced a similar resolution in the lower chamber slot gacor.

After two months, the investigation was paused at the request of the Philippine government, which stated that the Duterte administration was investigating allegations of extrajudicial killings and other crimes during the anti-illegal drug campaign.

This January, the ICC Pre-Trial Chamber I granted the ICC Prosecutor’s Office’s request to resume the investigation into the killing, which occurred in the midst of the Duterte administration’s drug war.
