DepEd to Probe Alleged Overpriced DSLR Camera Worth P155k

DepEd in Hot Water Anew Over P155k Worth of DSLR Camera

The Department of Education (DepEd) was put in how water again due to an alleged overpriced DSLR camera worth P155k.

After a photo of a digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera went popular on social media, the department was once again embroiled in an overpriced issue. A photojournalist shared a comparison of a reportedly DepEd-purchased camera costing PHP155,929 with the camera’s online pricing of PHP21,999.

The claimed message, however, was deleted, but other tweets were also posted challenging other exorbitant prices for entry-level DSLRs. These include a quotation for a proposal request for one mirrorless DSLR camera worth PHP170,000 in Agusan del Norte province, dated September 2022.

Meanwhile, DepEd spokesperson Michael Poa stated that the department will investigate the procurement of several cameras that were allegedly overpriced. That particular procurement was terminated based on an initial conversation with Caraga. According to Poa, those cameras were originally intended for use in broadcast/livestreaming.

In addition, the DepEd directed the regional office to submit the justification for the authorized budget. Based on the report, Poa stated that they would also look at purchasing a DSLR and a camcorder for around PHP270,000 and PHP230,000, respectively.

Meanwhile, the Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) Philippines has urged DepEd, the Commission on Audit, and lawmakers to investigate the latest overpricing claim. According to ACT Philippines Chairperson Vladimer Quetua, Vice President and DepEd Secretary Sara Duterte promised in her Basic Education Report 2023 to eliminate corruption in her department.

He claimed this problem demands Duterte’s attention “as well as the numerous other possible dubious transactions in the department. Her vow would only be significant if we see tangible efforts taken to address the irregularities, Poa added.
