Update on PhilHealth Operation, Coverage Following the Contribution Hike

PHILHEALTH – The Philippine Health Insurance Corporation revealed the effect of the suspension of the contribution hike this 2023.

Many Filipinos are members of the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation. The premium rates or contribution to the said state-run health insurance agency changes from time to time depending on what is set by the agency. However, the President has a say on the implementation of contribution hikes.

More commonly called PhilHealth, state insurance institution’s set contribution hike this 2023 is suspended following the memorandum released by Malacañang. According to the Palace, President Bongbong Marcos ordered the suspension of the set increase on the contribution rates of members due to the economic challenges in the country now.

The Philippines is facing high inflation for more than a year now. There are a lot of products in the Philippines that have high costs now and several households are facing financial challenges as their budget could no longer fit their needs.

Amid the situation in the Philippines now, it is set that the PhilHealth contribution this year 2023 is suspended upon the mandate from Pres. Bongbong Marcos. Many are wondering if the suspension of the contribution will affect the operation and coverage of the health insurance institution.

Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, PhilHealth said that the suspension of the contribution hike will not affect their operation but may have effects on the programs of the government agency.

Reportedly, the Out-Patient Therapeutic Care for Severe Acute Malnutrition as well as the Out-Patient Package for Mental Health are set to be launched this year. Following the suspension of the contribution hike, the said programs are among those that will undergo adjustments.

“Hindi pa natin ma-ascertain kung anong adjustments ang ating gagawin, pwedeng schedule, pwedeng sa pakete, pwedeng services. So sa ngayon hindi pa natin masasabi. But suffice it to say, tuloy po yan,” Health Spokesperson Rey Baleña said.
