Empoy Marquez has a colorful journey in showbiz
Comedian Empoy Marquez shared the sad story he experienced while he was trying to make other people laugh.
Empoy is now reaping the success of his 19 years in the entertainment industry. He is one of the most in-demand comedians of his generation. In a recent interview on Toni Talks, the YouTube talk show of Toni Gonzaga, Empoy shared how he started his showbiz career.
He said that it was his friend who really pushed him to join Magandang Tanghali Bayan’s Mr. Suave contest. Even though he failed to enter the audition twice, his friend still encouraged him to try again for the third time and he won the contest.
That competition led him to the chance to be part of Vhong Navarro’s movie Mr. Suave and the rest is history. In 2017, he was given the opportunity to be a leading man in the movie Kita Kita with Alessandra de Rossi. It was a big hit and the movie was hailed as the top-grossing independent film of all time.
Amid his success as a comedian, Empoy Marquez had to go through tough times also. He shared that there was a time when he became the “surprise guest” in Megastar Sharon Cuneta’s birthday concert.
While waiting for his turn to enter the stage, his PA (personal assistant) handed him the phone and there was a call from his cousin. Empoy was told that his grandmother was asking for him. The comedian asked, “eh, kumusta siya?” and he said that he was working. His cousin was silent for a moment and then the bad news came.
“Wala na siya,” Empoy’s cousin said and the comedian did not know how to react. He said that he did not know what to do when the microphone was handed to him and he was about to enter the stage. However, as they say, the show must go on, Empoy Marquez finished his performance and went to rest room immediately and cried.
