2 Scammer Women Arrested for Stealing Identity on Social Media in Manila
Authorities arrested two (2) scammer women for allegedly stealing identity on social media for scamming purposes in Manila.
Members of the Quezon City District Anti-Cybercrime Team (QCDACT) a Manila entrapment operation that resulted in the arrest of two women for identity theft. Allaine Santos, 32, and Maina Francisco, 20, two residents of M.H. Del Pilar Street in Malate, Manila, were named as the suspects.
Mahalia Vilaga, a 27-year-old woman from Quezon City, complained to QCDACT that a Facebook account was using her name and images without her consent. Lt. Michael Bernardo, the QCDACT officer in charge, said they received her complaint. On October 29, according to Villaga, she got messages from numerous Facebook profiles.
They have been telling her, she added, that a bogus Facebook account using her name has been defrauding them online. Officials from QCDACT advised Villaga to get in touch with the fictitious Facebook account and gather information for a potential entrapment scheme.
After the suspects sought money in exchange for removing the false Facebook account, the team started the operation. The culprits were apprehended at the Paul John General Merchandise remittance store, in the said area, based on the QCDACT report.
Two smartphones, three P1,000 notes, and a receipt for a remittance cash-out were taken as evidence from the suspects. The suspects will be the subject of an inquest at the QC Prosecutor’s Office while they are currently in the custody of QCDACT.
The suspects will be accused of breaking Republic Act 10175’s Sections 4 (Computer Related Identity Theft) and 5 (Aiding in the Commission of Cybercrime).
