Death Threat Intended Against Ed Lingao, Lourd de Veyra Goes Viral
The two (2) journalists News 5 Ed Lingao and Lourd de Veyra allegedly received a death threat claiming they will be assassinated.
After a radio commentator was killed in Las Pias last week, a Twitter user said the two journalists might be targeted for murder. The two broadcasters responded to the threat right away and labeled it an attempt to “harass journalists.”
The two News 5 journalists said that it is still unclear to them if the author of the tweet represents a real physical threat. They emphasized, however, that the assertion implied that they should “err on the side of caution.”
“Nevertheless, I think it is important to emphasize na ang mga taong ganiyan ay nagsasayang lang ng oras,” Lingao said in a statement. “Matagal na kaming takot. Pero nandito pa rin kami.”
On October 4, a certain “Seth Corteza,” whose name was stolen from an obscure 1996 action movie starring actor Ace Vergel, said in a tweet that he and de Veyra would be the next victims of a supposed “contract” and expressed anxiety about it.
A day after radio presenter Percival “Percy Lapid” Mabasa was tragically shot by two masked gunmen on a motorcycle in Las Pias, the tweet was posted. According to Interior Secretary Benhur Abalos, Lingao and de Veyra can expect assistance from law enforcement.
They will aid in locating the owner of the Twitter account who posted the message, said Abalos. The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) also said that they would make an effort to get in touch with the parties concerned, consider preventative measures, and provide support for the impacted journalists.
“We shall endeavor to reach out to the involved and explore preventive measures, through [our] Investigation Office, offer assistance as well as a quick response mechanism that will look into the veracity of threats, among others,” the office said in a statement.
“The Commission calls on the government to address these violations and take proactive measures to stop media attacks. We look forward to their efforts to look into this matter and similar cases of media rights violations committed in the country. CHR hopes for genuine justice and the end of impunity,” they added.
