PNP Custodial Unit Chief Sacked Over Hostage-Taking Incident

PNP Custodial Unit Chief Removed from Post Due to Hostage-Taking Incident

The chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP) custodial unit has been removed from post following the hostage-taking incident.

PNP chief General Rodolfo Azurin, Jr announced that they had to remove the custodial unit chief hostage-taking incident where former senator Leila de Lima becomes the victim. According to Azurin, they fired the officer to investigate any security failures at the facility.

“Administratively po ay ni-relieve po natin ‘yung chief ng custodial service unit para sa ganoon po ay malaman po natin kung ano ho ba ‘yung mga naging lapses po sa pag-implement ng security po sa custodial center natin,” the PNP Chief explained

Azurin, however, steadfastly resisted disclosing the name of the PNP custody center officer who was discharged. Azurin made it clear that the incident is being looked into by the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDg) and forensic teams, based on the report.

He claimed that on Sunday evening, De Lima was first sent to the PNP General Hospital to relax and recover from the event. The facility where the former senator was staying is being repaired as a result of the incident, Azurin continued.

“Kagabi po ay inilipat po natin siya pansamantala sa PNP General Hospital para makapagpahinga po siya, habang inaayos ang kanyang facility kasi doon nga po nangyari yung insidente,” he shared.

De Lima was bound and blindfolded when Feliciano Sulayao, Jr., one of the prisoners, managed to escape and approach the area where the former senator is being held. Idang Susukan and Arnel Cabintoy, De Lima’s other two friends, had already been shot dead when Sulayao took De Lima captive.

Susukan and Cabintoy allegedly opened fire after continuing to stab a police officer who was then delivering food rations in the PNP Custodial Center’s maximum security sector. General Rodoldo Azurin, Jr., the head of the PNP, had stated that De Lima was unharmed and in secure custody.
